Because these photos have very subtle gradations of white and gray in the snow and many areas of high contrast of branches with a sky or snow background, the jpeg compression still produces a large file. Note the 2 small photos above; they are a slice of the last large photo. The difference in compression can be seen in the snow on the lower left where the jpeg compression chooses a color for a relatively large block of space. This creates a jagged line of boxes rather than a gradual change of gradation. All of these photos compress to a larger file size than most photographs because of the many subtle changes in color and contrast.
